Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, January 13, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 00:21 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 52 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 13, 2025, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIT showed 9 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 43-69 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 18 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-16 millimeters and durations of 20-51 seconds, and 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-11 millimeters and durations of 30-371 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 6 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 270 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (168 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 90 times.
