Mount Marapi Erupted on Thursday Morning, Activity Level at Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Thursday (September 11, 2025) at 10:05 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted twice.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No visual eruption was observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 19.1 millimeters and a duration of 31 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, Mount Marapi''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on September 11, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 15 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 0.8-1.2 millimeters and earthquake durations of 98-290 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 1 millimeter, s-p 1.4 seconds, and an earthquake duration of 9 seconds, as well as 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-5.7 millimeters, s-p 17.8-20.2 seconds, and earthquake durations of 56-114 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,043 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,422 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 96 times.
