Central Java's Gender Empowerment Index Slightly Decreases to 71.73 in 2020

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the Gender Empowerment Index (GEI) score for Central Java was 71.73 points in 2020. This value decreased by 0.45 points from the previous year's 72.18.

The GEI score for Central Java in 2020 was the lowest in the last five years. This means that the role of women in the economic and political life of Central Java is declining.

The GEI score for Central Java has shown a fluctuating trend since 2015. At that time, the GEI score for Central Java was 74.80. Then, for two consecutive years, the value increased, but then decreased from 2018 to 2020.

The decrease in the GEI in Central Java in 2020 occurred in several of its constituent indicators. These indicators include women's involvement in parliament, which fell by 0.9 points from 19.17% in 2019 to 18.80% in 2020.

The next indicator is women's income, which decreased by 0.02 points from the previous year to 34.31% in 2020. On the other hand, women's role in the professional world increased by 0.84 points from 49.36% in 2019 to 50.20% in 2020.

The GEI is an indicator used to measure the implementation of gender justice and equality based on political and economic participation. Three indicators used in the GEI include involvement in parliament, participation as professional workers, and contribution to employment income.
