Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height 500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (29/8/2024) at 19:59 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 79 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak or 1,825 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 54 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 29, 2024, from 06:00 to 12:00 WIT showed 17 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14-28 millimeters and durations of 42-85 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 13 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-11 millimeters and durations of 22-49 seconds, and 10 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-20 millimeters and durations of 22-78 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,252 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has experienced the most eruptions with 1,248.
