Prevalence of Food Undernourishment in Surabaya City Decreased by 1.69% in the Last Year

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the prevalence of food insufficiency (Prevalence of Undernourishment/PoU) in Surabaya City, East Java reached 2.37% in 2024.

This figure decreased by 1.69% from the previous year's 4.06%, while in the last 5 years, it decreased by 0.72%.

The average PoU for Indonesia was 8.27% in 2024. This means that the PoU in Surabaya City is lower than the national average.

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) defines PoU as a condition where a person regularly consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needed for a normal, active, and healthy life.

This indicator can be used as a tool to assess the condition of food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that less than 2.37% of Surabaya's total population consumes food but has insufficient energy needs.

Compared to 37 other regencies/cities in East Java Province, Surabaya City's PoU ranks first. The region with the highest PoU (last rank) is Situbondo Regency (17.35%).
