Warning! Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning (Saturday, August 16, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday (August 16, 2025) at 08:30 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 8 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 8 millimeters and a duration of 68 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 16, 2025, from 00:00-06:00 WITA showed 34 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 9.7-21.4 millimeters and earthquake durations of 37-60 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 32 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-7.8 millimeters and durations of 23-52 seconds, as well as 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-1.3 millimeters and durations of 9-11 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and hot clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,634 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,259 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 234 times.
