Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, March 21, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 6:07 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 29 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 70 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 21, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 15 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 16-28 millimeters and durations of 28-70 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 31 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 17-53 seconds, and 7 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-24 millimeters and durations of 46-67 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,345 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,068 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 931 times.
