Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Monday, February 17, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 09:28 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak or 2,025 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11 millimeters and a duration of 38 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 17, 2025, from 18:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 26 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 19-28 millimeters and durations of 40-86 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 32 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-15 millimeters and durations of 19-53 seconds, and 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4-28 millimeters and durations of 52-392 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,320 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (662 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 568 times.
