Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 5,000 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 00.38 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 5,000 meters above the peak (6,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 442 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on June 29, 2024, from 12.00 to 18.00 WIT showed 10 times of puffing tremors with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 15-45 seconds.

Then, 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 2 millimeters and a duration of 105 seconds, and 62 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 8-15 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,308 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (567 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 165 times.
