Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Reaches 1,300 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 06.37 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,300 meters above the peak or 2,387 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on November 22, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 124 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-25 millimeters and durations of 36.11-68.97 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 11 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-17 millimeters, S-P intervals of 19.38-40.35 seconds, and durations of 56.86-90.02 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 3-7 millimeters, predominantly 4 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,300 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,148 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 46 times.
