Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Wednesday, November 20, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 9:50 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 25 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 600 meters above the peak (1,925 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 75 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on November 20, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 13 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 18-28 millimeters and durations of 40-77 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 9 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 26-55 seconds, and 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 9 millimeters and a duration of 118 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,261 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has experienced the most eruptions, with 2,120 eruptions.
