Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Column 200 Meters High from Peak

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (August 4, 2025) at 8:42 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 2 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to be around 200 meters above the peak (1,623 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11.8 millimeters and a duration of 32 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 4, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 7 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 8.5-19.3 millimeters and durations of 28-35 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 20 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.3-7 millimeters and durations of 27-32 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.4 millimeters s-p 14 seconds and a duration of 49 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, West sector, and Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,455 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,188 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 207 times.
