Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Evening (Sunday, March 16, 2025)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 4:03 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 42 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,584 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 179 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 16, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 216-297 seconds.

Then, there were 9 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 76-101 seconds, and 4 local tectonic quakes with amplitudes of 29-47.3 millimeters (S-P not observed) and durations of 82-264 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector within a distance of 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,226 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,021 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 195 times.
