Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Wednesday, July 3, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 6:04 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 7 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 3,000 meters above the peak or 4,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate to thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on July 3, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 3 instances of puffing tremors with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 25-45 seconds.

Then, 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 5-7 millimeters and durations of 72-80 seconds, and 91 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 6-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,417 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (623 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 186 times.
