Warning! Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, August 27, 2025)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday (8/27/2025) at 02:45 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 2 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed reached None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and a duration of 35 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 27, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 3 times of emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-1.4 millimeters and earthquake durations of 30-36 seconds.

Furthermore, 3 times of local tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.1-3.3 millimeters s-p 2.2-5.1 seconds and earthquake durations of 16-24 seconds, and 3 times of distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-1.4 millimeters s-p 12.5-20.7 seconds and earthquake durations of 42-72 seconds occurred.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and hikers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,828 volcano eruptions in Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,331 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 89 times.
