Mount Ibu Erupts Monday Morning, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday (8/7/2024) at 05.39 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu only erupted once.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak (2,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 26 millimeters and a duration of 66 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on July 8, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 1 eruption/explosion with an amplitude of 11 millimeters and a duration of 107 seconds.

Then, there were 20 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 14-67 seconds, and 10 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-4 millimeters and durations of 19-126 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,508 volcanic eruptions/explosions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (666 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 204 times.
