10 Provinces with the Highest National Representation of Women in Politics

East Nusa Tenggara was the Indonesian province with the highest representation of women in politics in 2020. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that the percentage of women in political parties in the province reached 58.82%.

Affirmative action regarding women's representation in political party institutions is stipulated in Law No. 2 of 2008 concerning Political Parties.

This law mandates that political parties include 30% women's representation in their establishment and formation. This applies not only to national-level political parties but also to those at the regency/city level.

Furthermore, a political party can only participate in general elections if it has implemented at least 30% women's representation in its central-level leadership. This is stipulated in Law No. 10 of 2008 concerning the Election of Members of the House of Representatives, the Regional Representatives Council, and the Regional People's Representative Council.

BPS data shows that the majority of Indonesian provinces have already achieved women's representation in political parties above 30%, such as North Maluku with a proportion of 39.47%.

Then there is Papua with 38.18% women's representation in political parties, followed by Central Kalimantan and Yogyakarta Special Region with proportions of 38.04% and 37.25% respectively.

However, seven provinces have yet to reach the 30% target for women's representation: Gorontalo (29.85%), Riau (29.8%), Bangka Belitung Islands (29.8%), Central Sulawesi (28.03%), North Sumatra (25.84%), Aceh (24.85%), and Riau Islands (22.27%).
