West Nusa Tenggara Has the Highest Gender Inequality Index in Indonesia

West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province in Indonesia has the highest gender inequality index (GII) among other provinces. This is based on a study by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which recorded a GII score of 0.531 points in 2020.

However, NTB's GII score improved compared to 2019, which was 0.543 points. Since 2019, NTB has consistently had the highest GII score, indicating the lowest level of gender equality among Indonesian provinces.

Southeast Sulawesi ranked second with a GII score of 0.51 points last year, followed by Jambi with a score of 0.505 points.

Conversely, the province with the lowest GII score was Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), at 0.069 points in 2020. This shows that DIY achieved the best gender equality. Above DIY were DKI Jakarta with a GII score of 0.166 points, Bali with 0.225 points, and Central Java with 0.256 points.

The GII reflects the loss in human development achievements due to gender inequality, measured across health, empowerment, and labor market access. The GII measurement helps the government and stakeholders evaluate gender-based development achievements and find solutions for improvement.
