Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (7/7/2024) at 10:25 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 24 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11 millimeters and a duration of 107 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 7, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 8 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 45-60 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 222 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 6-14 seconds, and 22 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-26 millimeters, s-p 0.5-1.5 seconds, and durations of 8-20 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,500 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (662 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 203 times.
