Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Tuesday, January 14, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 11:07 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 31 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 3,000 meters above the peak or 4,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 114 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 14, 2025, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIT showed 17 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17-28 millimeters and durations of 49-269 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 70 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-22 millimeters and durations of 21-51 seconds, and 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 30-170 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 6 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 316 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (188 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 114 times.
