Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches 500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 09:34 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak or 3,391 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.2 millimeters and a duration of 53 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 9, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 2.3 millimeters and a duration of 60 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 14 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-3.9 millimeters and durations of 22-106 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.4 millimeters, s-p 1.6 seconds, and a duration of 30 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to not enter and not carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 947 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (383 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 184 times.
