Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Sunday, August 17, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (August 17, 2025) at 2:34 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 24 times.

Reporting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

Visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 57 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 17, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 111 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 38.28-75.65 seconds.

Subsequently, 2 times blast earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and earthquake durations of 46.61-46.91 seconds, and 20 times harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 49.42-107 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,651 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,270 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 2,077 times.
