Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Thursday, June 27, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 09.06 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 4,000 meters above the peak (5,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate to thick intensity towards the north and northwest. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on June 27, 2024, from 00.00 to 06.00 WIT showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 409 seconds.

Then, there were 10 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-12 millimeters and durations of 33-61 seconds, and 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 35-230 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,286 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (557 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 162 times.
