Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, April 20, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at 09.25 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 76 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 400 meters above the peak or 1,725 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 55 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 20, 2025, from 18.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 33 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 24-54 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 41 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 15-47 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 42-84 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,034 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,356 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 1,167 times.
