Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Tonight, Volcanic Ash Reaches Around 1,000 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (8/22/2025) at 18:24 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 12 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be grey with thin to moderate intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 115 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki''s activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 22, 2025, from 12:00-18:00 WITA, showed 7 times of emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-5.9 millimeters and durations of 31-41 seconds.

Furthermore, 7 times of non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-7.1 millimeters and durations of 65-177 seconds, and 7 times of low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-4.4 millimeters and durations of 21-29 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a radius of 6 kilometers and a Southwest-Northeast sectoral distance of 7 kilometers from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,739 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,300 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 468 times.
