Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches 3,000 Meters Above Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Monday (September 22, 2025) at 5:55 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 28 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be about 3,000 meters above the peak or 4,584 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22.2 millimeters and a duration of 139 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 22, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA, showed 9 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.9-29.6 millimeters and durations of 89-139 seconds.

Furthermore, 1 exhalation earthquake occurred with an amplitude of 10.5 millimeters and a duration of 33 seconds, and 7 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 79-129 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to engage in any activities within a 6-kilometer radius and a 7-kilometer sectoral area from the Southwest to the Northeast of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki''s eruption center.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,275 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java erupted the most (2,475 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 590 times.
