Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Tuesday Afternoon; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 4:19 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 11 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 2,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 134 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 18, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 2 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 68-248 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-4.4 millimeters and durations of 77-113 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 75-264 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector up to 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,277 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,040 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 209 times.
