Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, April 18, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 8:38 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 56 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 400 meters above the peak (1,725 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 68 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 18, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 27 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 34-78 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 38 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-18 millimeters and durations of 19-68 seconds, as well as 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 5 millimeters and a duration of 84 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,949 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,339 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 1,147 times.
