Types of Contraceptive Methods Used by Couples in Indonesia in 2024

According to data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), 62.38% of fertile-aged couples in Indonesia participated in family planning programs in 2024.

The most widely used modern contraceptive method is injections, with 35.39% of users, followed by birth control pills at 7.54%.

"This pattern occurs every year, where family planning participants tend to choose short-term contraceptive methods over long-term ones," wrote Kemenkes in its Indonesia Health Profile 2024 report.

Kemenkes explained that injections and birth control pills are categorized as short-term contraceptive methods, which have lower effectiveness in preventing pregnancy compared to long-term contraception.

Next, 6.92% use implants, 6.08% use IUDs (intrauterine devices), 2.67% use female sterilization (MOW), and 2.01% use condoms.

Additionally, some couples use the lactational amenorrhea method (MAL) and male sterilization (MOP), with proportions of 0.82% and 0.08% respectively.

When viewed by family planning service providers, the majority of fertile-aged couples in Indonesia access services at independent midwife practices, with a proportion of 36.46%.

Others access family planning services at sub-health centers/mobile clinics/village midwives (21%), community health centers or TNI/Polri clinics (16.03%), and pharmacies (8.90%).
