The number of narcotics cases handled by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) surged significantly between 2009 and 2018. However, a downward trend emerged since 2019.
This decline continued in 2024, with the BNN handling only 651 cases—a decrease of approximately 29% compared to the previous year.
The number of cases handled in 2024 was also the lowest in the last nine years, as shown in the graph.
"2024 was a challenging year for the BNN in carrying out its duties in the field of Prevention and Eradication of Narcotics Abuse and Trafficking (P4GN)," the BNN stated in a press release (23/12/2024).
"The rapidly changing and unpredictable global situation has made narcotics crimes increasingly complex and difficult to control, along with the emergence of new methods in narcotics abuse and trafficking that continue to evolve," it continued.
In response to this situation, the BNN stated it would continue to strengthen its capabilities, including through intelligence.
"The BNN is strengthening its intelligence capabilities through the development of intelligence big data to support P4GN policies, as well as intensifying surveillance activities, improving intelligence human resource capacity, and strengthening drug signature analysis," they said.
Cumulatively, from 2009 to 2024, the BNN handled 9,348 narcotics cases. These cases involved evidence with a total value of Rp 1.13 trillion.
During the 2009-2024 period, the BNN handled the most narcotics cases in North Sumatra, with 691 cases.
This was followed by East Java with 563 cases, East Kalimantan with 504 cases, and South Sumatra with 406 cases.
