Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Tuesday, April 8, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 4:46 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 26 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 33 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on April 8, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 27 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 23-28 millimeters and durations of 39-55 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 46 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-9 millimeters and durations of 17-35 seconds, and 57 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 12-24 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,679 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,240 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 1,040 times.
