Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon (Thursday, August 29, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday (29/8/2024) at 12.14 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 18 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 300 meters above the peak (1,884 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 29, 2024, from 06.00 to 12.00 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with an amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 226-252 seconds.

Then, there were 3 tremor quakes with an amplitude of 4.4-7.4 millimeters and a duration of 77-144 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and a duration of 34-68 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,232 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,245 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 566 times.
