Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Tuesday, October 22, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 00:32 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This marks the third eruption of Mount Semeru in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 130 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB on October 22, 2024, showed 66 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-23 millimeters and durations of 59-137 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 6 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 3-5 mm and durations of 45-85 seconds, and 12 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 37-92 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 8 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 13 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,521 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,838 eruptions), while Mount Semeru erupted 1,514 times.
