Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches 500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at 6:54 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,923 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 38 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismicity on March 18, 2025, from 00.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 14 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 17.3-25.8 millimeters and durations of 26-46 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 86 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 1.1-18.6 millimeters and durations of 23-73 seconds, and 35 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 1.4-16.1 millimeters and durations of 3.8-15.6 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should always be aware of the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides from the east side of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,269 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,038 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 39 times.
