Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Height Around 300 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (August 15, 2025) at 10:31 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column was about 300 meters above the peak or 1,723 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18.1 millimeters and a duration of 59 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Siaga/Alert). Seismicity observations on August 15, 2025, from 00:00-06:00 WITA showed 30 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11.3-28.9 millimeters and durations of 32-62 seconds. Additionally, there were 74 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.5-10.3 millimeters and durations of 25-34 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and to be aware of the potential dangers from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, West sector, and Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,617 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,248 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 232 times.
