Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Saturday, March 22, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 8:13 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 69 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 22, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 53 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 13-22 millimeters and durations of 62-192 seconds.

Then, there were 6 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 45-80 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 106-433 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,360 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 1,079 eruptions.
