Warning! Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon (Sunday, August 17, 2025)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (8/17/2025) at 5:46 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 300 meters above the peak (1,723 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11 millimeters and a duration of 66 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 17, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 41 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.8-11 millimeters and earthquake durations of 37-66 seconds.

Then, 21 times of shallow gas emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.6-2.5 millimeters and earthquake durations of 24-42 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters s-p 1.3 seconds and an earthquake duration of 17 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok as well as visitors/climbers/tourists not to enter and not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, to be aware of the potential danger from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic clouds from the South and Southeast sectors, the West sector, and the Northeast sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,655 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,271 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 236 times.
