Mount Ibu Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 700 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (18/9/2025) at 00:35 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 19 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 700 meters above the peak or 2,025 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 85 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 18, 2025, at 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 84 eruption tremors/earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 27-74 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 exhalation tremor with an amplitude of 2 millimeters and a duration of 34 seconds, and 20 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-16 millimeters and durations of 33-154 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu''s active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,137 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,457 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 2,259 times.
