Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Early Sunday Morning; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at 03:36 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 35 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 800 meters above the peak or 2,384 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.9 millimeters and a duration of 243 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on October 13, 2024, from 18:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 2.2-5.9 millimeters and durations of 267-512 seconds.

Then, there were 2 harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and durations of 37-279 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 2.2 millimeters and a duration of 36 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,440 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,821 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 782 times.
