Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 400 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 9:45 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 38 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 400 meters above the peak or 1,725 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 47 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 9, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 26 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 28-58 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 33 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 23-40 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-5 millimeters and durations of 36-91 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,707 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,253 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 1,052 times.
