Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, July 4, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (4/7/2024) at 22:15 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 11 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 3,000 meters above the peak or 4,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on July 4, 2024, from 12:00 to 18:00 WIT showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 24 millimeters and a duration of 105 seconds.

Then, there were 21 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-22 millimeters and durations of 14-59 seconds, and 5 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 42-139 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,440 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (635 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 190 times.
