Mount Ibu Erupts on Thursday Night, Status Raised to Highest Alert Level

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (20/6/2024) at 8.10 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 16 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 2,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with moderate intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 4 millimeters and a duration of 98 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on June 20, 2024, from 12.00 PM to 6.00 PM WIT showed 5 times of puffing tremors with amplitudes of 2-12 millimeters and durations of 25-65 seconds.

Then, 1 harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 16 millimeters and a duration of 570 seconds, and 112 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-14 millimeters and durations of 5-15 seconds.

PVMBG urges the community around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,213 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (530 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 150 times.
