Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, November 20, 2024)

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 11:12 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (2,087 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on November 20, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 204 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-14 millimeters and durations of 31.72-59.69 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 23 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-14 millimeters, S-P intervals of 10.07-58.9 seconds, and durations of 60.64-133.58 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-6 millimeters, predominantly 6 millimeters.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists to refrain from activities, climbing, and approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,253 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,117 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 45 times.
