Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, April 17, 2025)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 11:08 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 18 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 300 meters above the peak or 1,884 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 67 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on April 17, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.1-22.9 millimeters and durations of 70-226 seconds.

Then, there were 6 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 4.4-11 millimeters and durations of 40-110 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 5.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 89-149 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 6-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,924 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,333 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 268 times.
