Mount Ibu Erupts on Friday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 4:16 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 54 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed at approximately None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 46 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 14, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 25 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and durations of 22-74 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 39 tremor events with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 17-59 seconds, and 3 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-4 millimeters and durations of 51-137 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,168 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,008 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 886 times.
