Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height Reaches 4,800 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 06:15 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 6 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 4,800 meters above the peak (5,887 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on December 7, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 64 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters and durations of 32.54-210.25 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 6 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-15 millimeters, s-p 13.99-77.22 seconds, and durations of 62.43-179.19 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-5 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,761 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,383 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 60 times.
