Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Plume 200 Meters Above Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday (27/8/2025) at 11.39 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 2 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 200 meters above the peak (1,287 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with moderate intensity towards the east. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Dukono''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on August 27, 2025, at 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 10 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-7 millimeters and earthquake durations of 37.41-133.09 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 6 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-34 millimeters, s-p times of 12.67-47.59 seconds, and earthquake durations of 63.11-161.81 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor earthquake with amplitudes of 1-4 millimeters, dominant at 2 millimeters.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,825 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,330 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 487 times.
