Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Eruption Height Reaches 2,000 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 2:07 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 7 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 2,000 meters above the peak (3,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on December 28, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 6 emission quakes with amplitudes of 2.2-5.9 millimeters and durations of 36-97 seconds.

Then, 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-5.9 millimeters and durations of 72-102 seconds, and 4 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-7.4 millimeters, s-p 1-1.8 seconds, and durations of 16-18 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-northeast sector up to 6 kilometers.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,143 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,526 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 985 times.
