The Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi or MK) granted a lawsuit regarding the minimum age requirement for presidential and vice-presidential candidates in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections on October 16, 2023.
The Court allowed individuals under 40 years old to run, provided they have experience as a regional head or in another position elected through an election.
This ruling led the public to believe that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) was involved, as his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who was under 40 at the time, was being considered as a potential vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Furthermore, the MK decision was granted by MK Chief Justice Anwar Usman, Gibran's uncle.
Therefore, what is public perception regarding the issue of President Jokowi's alleged involvement in the MK's decision?
According to a Charta Politika survey, a majority, or 39.7% of respondents, agreed that President Jokowi was involved in the MK's decision on the age limit for presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
On the other hand, 23.3% of respondents did not believe the allegation. The remaining 37% did not know or did not answer.
Relatedly, this survey also found that 59.3% of respondents agreed that Gibran Rakabuming Raka's candidacy as a potential vice-presidential candidate was a form of political dynasty.
Meanwhile, 31.9% of respondents disagreed, and 18.8% chose not to answer.
This survey involved 2,400 respondents from all provinces in Indonesia aged 17 and above or who were married. The sample was taken using a multistage random sampling method.
Data collection was conducted from October 26-31, 2023, using face-to-face interviews. The margin of error is 2% with a 95% confidence level.
