"Paternity leave" or "cuti ayah" is a leave entitlement specifically granted to men when their wives give birth, or for other purposes related to childcare.
According to World Bank data, as of 2023, at least 123 countries have national regulations regarding paternity leave. However, the duration of the leave varies.
Slovakia has the longest paternity leave. This Central European country provides paid leave for fathers for a maximum of 196 days, or about 6.5 months.
This entitlement can even be extended under certain conditions, for example, for men whose wives give birth to twins or more.
Iceland (180 days or 6 months) and Spain (112 days or about 3.5 months) also offer extended paternity leave.
Next are the Netherlands, Portugal, Austria, Lithuania, Belgium, Japan, and France, with leave durations as shown in the graph [Note: Graph not included in the provided text].
The Indonesian government is currently developing regulations for paternity leave with a maximum duration of 60 days. However, this entitlement is only granted to Civil Servants (ASN).
"The government will grant leave to husbands whose wives give birth or experience a miscarriage," said the Minister of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reform (PANRB), Abdullah Azwar Anas, in a press release on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
"Leave to accompany a wife who has given birth is a right for male civil servants, regulated and guaranteed by the state," he said.
Anas stated that the paternity leave entitlement for civil servants is still under discussion, and the regulations are targeted for completion in April 2024.
